Every year, Volunteers of America, Dakotas touches the lives of many people—and with your support today, we can touch many more this year. Your gift will provide vital resources like food, shelter, rehabilitation and counseling to your neighbors in need.

HomePlace Capital Campaign

Youth homelessness often goes unrecognized in Sioux Falls. While we may not see teens sleeping in parks or asking for money downtown, many young people struggle to find safe, secure places to live. During the 2016-2017 school year, the Sioux Falls School District identified 984 homeless children and youth – 91 between the ages of 16 and 21. There are homeless children and teens in every single school in the district. Without a secure, permanent home, these young people often couch surf (staying with friends or acquaintances for a few nights at a time), live in their cars or seek shelter in other unsafe environments in order to stay off the streets.

No young person chooses to experience homelessness. Unfortunately, they sometimes face difficult circumstances that contribute to their homelessness, including family dysfunction, abuse at home, aging out of the foster care system, exiting the juvenile justice system and economic hardship.

Receiving financial support from multiple sources has allowed Axis 180 to house and empower young people experiencing homelessness in Sioux Falls for more than a decade. However, because our current funding sources support only the cost of housing and providing services, we have been forced to delay many expensive – yet necessary – maintenance and repairs to the building. Approximately $300,000 in building repairs are needed in order to keep the current Axis 180 location operational, a number that nearly equals the total value of the building.

Instead of funding costly repairs for an aging building, Volunteers of America, Dakotas is launching a $3.5 million campaign to build a new facility, HomePlace, for young people experiencing homelessness. The planned facility will allow us to serve 21 youth at a time (double our current capacity) in a therapeutic setting designed for this population’s specific needs.

Our community thrives and grows when individuals are inspired to make a commitment innovative solutions. Your contribution to this campaign will help young people overcome homelessness and become successful members of our community. Each donation is an investment in the future of Sioux Falls.
